A heartfelt welcome on this Easter Morning. In the Gospel we hear that Mary Magdalene goes to the tomb of Jesus in the early morning. But she does not find the Body of Him whom she has so dearly loved. The empty tomb confronts her with the greatest mystery of the Christian faith: the resurrection from the dead. For us too, this remains ever again a challenging Message: Jesus is not dead, but He lives.
Dear brothers and sisters, in the Gospel of this Easter Morning we encounter the first disciples of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Simon Peter and John. At first they are rather confused, they seek support in one another and try to understand what has happened. In the last sentence of the Gospel it says: ‘they did not yet understand what was written, that Jesus must rise from the dead.’ This leads us to ask what it actually means, that Jesus has risen from the dead.
It is a question that has occupied people who feel drawn to the faith for centuries. When we consider more closely the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we must take account of two different dimensions. In the first place, the resurrection is to be regarded as a historical event. For this we have the testimony of the disciples of Jesus, first of all of the women and then also of the apostles and of still other contemporaries of Jesus. Thus it is recorded in the four Gospels and in the letters of Paul, from which we shall hear more in the coming Easter season.
But the resurrection is more than merely a historical event. From the testimonies of the disciples we gather that Jesus appeared to them in the same body that was tortured and crucified, but which at the same time bears the characteristics of a glorified body: it is no longer bound to time and space, for it belongs only to the divine kingdom of the Father. This means that the resurrection of Jesus is at the same time a supernatural, a transcendent event, a mystery of faith of which no human being has seen how it physically came about. This event has an abiding significance for us, for all generations. Through His resurrection Christ grants us access to a new life.
In this new life we can live in peace with God because we are justified by faith. Unfortunately, there is not peace everywhere in our world. This too Jesus foretold. There will be wars and disasters of every kind. What remains is that we may live in the expectation of eternal life, of the encounter with the living God.
Brothers and sisters, the new life in faith in God is something we must learn and that we must explain to one another in order to understand it better. We already see this among Jesus’ disciples. After seeing the empty tomb, Mary Magdalene hastens back to the apostles and says to them: ‘they have taken the Lord out of the tomb.’ John runs to the tomb, overtakes Peter, but does not go inside. Simon Peter does go inside, but he sees only the facts: the linen cloths, the rolled-up cloth. He could not immediately draw the right conclusion. And perhaps Peter still doubted himself as well, on account of his behaviour in the last days of Jesus’ life. For he had denied knowing Jesus when Jesus was interrogated by the high priests and the whole court, the Sanhedrin.
When John enters the tomb, he does come to faith. He understands what is written in Scripture: that the Messiah had to rise from the dead. Later Peter too will come to faith, which we heard in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. The insight that Peter there expresses so convincingly grew in him slowly but surely. Thus it may also happen to us. We discover that out of love God raised His Son from the dead. Out of love for us Jesus became man, He stands by us in all suffering and He shares likewise in all joy. We can grow in this insight by directing ourselves toward the heavenly and not the earthly. By making time for moments of silence, by praying, by invoking the intercession of Mary and the saints, by asking for the help of the Holy Spirit. Thus we can discover the living God in our temporal existence, thus Christ becomes more and more our life, and we may share in His glory. Amen.

Paasmorgen
Amen.
