Brothers and sisters, in life we are inevitably confronted with good and evil powers. The first reading from the Apocalypse, about the Woman who bears a Child that is threatened by a Dragon, is a clear allusion to this. As is the case with more Scripture readings, several interpretations are possible here. Thus it is said that the Woman wears a crown with twelve stars. The number twelve can refer to the twelve tribes of Israel and also to the twelve apostles. The struggle between the Woman and the Dragon is sometimes compared with the enmity between Eve, the first woman from the book of Genesis, and the serpent. In the Catholic tradition Mary is seen as the Woman from the Apocalypse. Hence this reading was chosen for the feast of the Assumption of Mary. In Catholic teaching there is a contrast between Eve and Mary: Eve, with whom sin began, and Mary, who through the motherhood of her Son Jesus ensures that sin is dealt with.

The second reading speaks of the kingship of Jesus in heaven; likewise Mary is crowned in heaven and honoured on earth as queen of peace. With this we have arrived at today's great solemnity: the Assumption of Mary. In 1950 the Catholic Church, through the mouth of Pope Pius XII, proclaimed the Assumption of Mary as a dogma. We must bear in mind here that a dogma is a truth of faith that we cannot fully reason out with our intellect. But there is an age-old belief, both in the Western and in the Eastern Church, that Mary after her death was taken up into heaven with soul and body.

The apostle Paul speaks in his letter to the Corinthians of death being overcome. Just as we believe of many saints that they are taken up directly into heaven and greeted by Christ, so the Church believes this also of Mary. This faith can help us when evil befalls us, for example through illness, or at the death of loved ones. It can teach us to accept temporary evil, in the knowledge that good triumphs.

The dogma of the Assumption of Mary is relevant to all of us, because in Mary we see a foreshadowing of the resurrection of body and spirit that awaits us all and which we continually confess in the creed. Mary is fully human like us, even though she was without sin.

The wondrous events that Mary experienced already at the beginning of Jesus' earthly life are told in today's Gospel. By Elizabeth Mary is greeted immediately upon her visit as the blessed among women.

Elizabeth recognises Mary as the mother of her Lord. And Mary remains simplicity itself, though she is well aware of the greatness of the task entrusted to her. She calls herself the handmaid of the Lord, who has done his wonders in her. In her song of praise, which we know as the Magnificat, Mary also has a message for all generations that come after her: the Lord is merciful to those who fear Him, but He scatters those who are proud of heart. Earthly power is soon done with, but the needy can count on His help.

Because of the birth of her Son, Mary has for centuries been an inexhaustible source of hope and comfort for the countless people who call upon her compassion and intercession with God. The few visionaries who were allowed to see the Mother of God testify of an indescribable beauty. Hence Pope Francis says of Mary: 'Reigning in glory, she shows us that our hope is real.' Mary is moreover a source of great joy because of her Son Jesus, whom she brought into the world. A joy that runs like a thread through the history of the Church, which blesses Mary through all generations. Amen.

Maria Tenhemelopneming

Amen.
