On 24 June 2000, Mgr. Jan van Burgsteden (1935) was appointed auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Haarlem (since 2009 Haarlem-Amsterdam) by Pope John Paul II. On 9 September 2000 he received his episcopal ordination at the hands of Mgr. Jozef Punt. This year we therefore commemorate the fact that he has been a bishop for 25 years.
On 9 September 2025 this was already celebrated in the intimate setting of our Beguinage Chapel, of which he was rector until 2001. On 25 October 2025 this jubilee was celebrated once more at length with a pontifical Holy Mass in the cathedral basilica of Saint Bavo in Haarlem, the church where he was also ordained at the time.
In the presence of many Church dignitaries, family and friends, as well as some regular visitors to our chapel, this joyful event was reflected upon during the Eucharistic celebration. After the celebration there was a well-attended reception.
After his retirement in 2011, he remained active for many years within the Dutch Church Province, until at the end of 2024 he officially took leave of the Dutch Bishops' Conference.
Although his mobility leaves something to be desired, he fortunately still enjoys good health. We see him (almost) every week as a visitor at the Sunday celebration in the chapel. We hope that he will remain among us in good health for many years to come.

Jubileum mgr. Van Burgsteden
Op 24 juni 2000 werd mgr. Jan van Burgsteden (1935) door paus Paulus II benoemd tot hulpbisschop van het bisdom Haarlem (sinds 2009 Haarlem-Amsterdam). Op 9 september 2000 ontving hij de bisschopswijding uit handen van mgr. Jozef Punt. Wij gedenken daarom dit jaar het feit dat hij 25 jaar bisschop is.
Op 9 september 2025 werd dit al gevierd in de intieme omgeving van onze Begijnhofkapel, waarvan hij tot 2001 rector is geweest. Op 25 oktober 2025 is dit jubileum nog eens uitgebreid gevierd met een pontificale H. Mis in de kathedrale basiliek Sint Bavo in Haarlem, de kerk waar hij destijds ook is gewijd.
In aanwezigheid van vele kerkelijke hoogwaardigheidsbekleders, familie en vrienden, alsmede enige vaste bezoekers van onze kapel werd in de eucharistieviering stilgestaan bij dit heugelijke feit. Na afloop van de viering was er een druk bezochte receptie.
Nadat hij in 2011 met emeritaat was gegaan, is hij nog vele jaren actief geweest binnen de Nederlandse Kerkprovincie, totdat hij eind 2024 officieel afscheid heeft genomen van de Nederlandse bisschoppenconferentie.
Hoewel zijn mobiliteit te wensen overlaat, geniet hij gelukkig nog steeds van een goede gezondheid. Wij zien hem (bijna) iedere week als bezoeker aan de zondagsviering in de kapel. Wij hopen dat hij nog vele jaren in goede gezondheid in ons midden zal zijn.
