This story also has a second level. The disciples were sensible and advised Jesus to send away the people who had listened to him all day, so that they could go and look for food in the surrounding area themselves. But Jesus gave his disciples the impossible command: You give them something to eat. They did what Jesus instructed them to do. They had everyone sit down together in groups. Jesus took the bread, said a blessing over it, broke it, and gave it to the disciples to distribute to the crowd. And everyone received more than enough. All this means that the task you receive may be greater than you can humanly manage, but that you can nevertheless trust that you can fulfil that task, because that task has a superhuman, divine origin.
Something similar applies to the task the disciples were given to carry out Jesus' message, for the good news – the gospel – is stronger than the messenger. The message must do its own work, through the proclamation by the disciples. The proclaimers must believe in the power of their message. Thus you must believe in the power of the task that God gives you.
Third level: bread broken and shared in the Eucharist The story has yet a third level. We heard that the day was drawing to an end. We further heard that Jesus took the loaves, said a blessing over them, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples to distribute. All these words return in the account of the Last Supper (Luke 22:19). In other words: the story of the multiplication of the loaves calls to mind the Last Supper and the Eucharist. We have now arrived at today's feast: Corpus Christi. During the Eucharist we remember Jesus, who allowed himself to be broken, who gave himself to his own. But his words about sharing with one another were heard by few; he himself was murdered because of the message he brought; his life seemed a failure. But our Easter faith teaches us that this Jesus lives with his Father, that the message of his life has been confirmed by God, that, seen from God, the possibility continues to exist of a world in which people share with one another, so that there is enough for everyone. The story on three levels
A world in which people share with one another: that is the first level of the story of the multiplication of the loaves.
This is a task that surpasses our ability, but which we can nevertheless fulfil because this task has a superhuman, divine origin. This is the second level of the story.
The third level of the story of the multiplication of the loaves is the story of Jesus, the risen Lord, as it is told in the Eucharist. The remembrance of the risen Lord in the Eucharist inspires us to make the story of the multiplication of the loaves come true on all levels, so that everyone has enough.

Het wonder van de broodvermenigvuldiging
Vandaag vieren wij Sacramentsdag. Het evangelie gaat over de wonderbare broodvermenigvuldiging. We kunnen dit verhaal op drie niveaus verstaan.
Eerste niveau: delen met elkaar Ruim negen procent van de wereldbevolking heeft niet genoeg te eten. Vooral in Afrika is de situatie nijpend: 1 op de 5 lijdt hier honger. Toch is de opbrengst van de aarde genoeg voor de wereldbevolking, maar het voedsel dat er is wordt niet eerlijk verdeeld. Wanneer mensen met elkaar zouden delen zou er genoeg zijn voor iedereen. Delen gebeurt in het evangelie vandaag. De leerlingen van Jezus kregen de opdracht om wat er was – vijf broden en twee vissen – te verdelen over een grote menigte hongerige mensen. En het lukte nog ook: iedereen kreeg genoeg en er bleef nog over. Een wonder dat nog steeds kan gebeuren waar mensen met elkaar weten te delen. Dit is de eerste betekenis van het verhaal van de broodvermenigvuldiging. Het is een verhaal dat zich afspeelt op intermenselijk niveau. Maar het ziet er helaas niet direct naar uit dat de mogelijkheid en de wil er zijn dat het ideaal dat er genoeg is voor iedereen wordt gerealiseerd. Tweede niveau: 'Geven jullie hun te eten'
Dit verhaal heeft nog een tweede niveau. De leerlingen waren verstandig en gaven Jezus de raad om de mensen die de hele dag naar hem hadden geluisterd weg te sturen zodat ze zelf in de buurt naar eten op zoek zouden kunnen gaan. Maar Jezus gaf aan zijn leerlingen de onmogelijke opdracht: Geven jullie hun te eten. Ze deden wat Jezus hun opdroeg. Ze lieten iedereen in groepen bij elkaar zitten. Jezus nam het brood, sprak er een zegen over uit, brak het en gaf het aan de leerlingen om aan de menigte uit te delen. En iedereen kreeg meer dan genoeg. Dit alles betekent dat de opdracht die je krijgt groter kan zijn dan je menselijk gezien aan kunt, maar dat je er toch op kunt vertrouwen dat je aan die opdracht kunt voldoen, omdat die opdracht een bovenmenselijke, goddelijke oorsprong heeft.
Iets dergelijks geldt ook de opdracht die de leerlingen hebben gekregen om Jezus' boodschap uit de dragen, want de blijde boodschap – het evangelie - is sterker dan de boodschapper. De boodschap moet zelf zijn werk doen, via de verkondiging door de leerlingen. De verkondigers dienen te geloven in de kracht van hun boodschap. Zo dien je te geloven in de kracht van de opdracht die God je geeft.
Derde niveau: brood gebroken en gedeeld in de eucharistie Het verhaal heeft nog een derde niveau. We hoorden dat de dag ten einde liep. We hoorden verder dat Jezus de broden nam, er een zegengebed over sprak, het brood brak en het aan zijn leerlingen gaf om uit te delen. Al deze woorden keren terug in verhaal van het laatste avondmaal (Luc. 22:19). Met andere woorden: het verhaal van de broodvermenigvuldiging doet denken aan het laatste avondmaal en de eucharistie. We zijn nu aangeland bij het feest van vandaag: Sacramentsdag. Tijdens de eucharistie herdenken wij Jezus, die zichzelf heeft laten breken, die zichzelf gegeven heeft aan de zijnen. Maar zijn woorden over delen met elkaar werden door weinigen gehoord, hijzelf werd vermoord vanwege de boodschap die hij bracht, zijn leven leek een mislukking. Maar ons paasgeloof leert ons dat deze Jezus leeft bij zijn Vader, dat de boodschap van zijn leven door God bevestigd is, dat vanuit God gezien de mogelijkheid blijft bestaan van een wereld waarin mensen delen met elkaar, zodat er voor ieder genoeg is. Het verhaal op drie niveaus
Een wereld waarin mensen delen met elkaar: dat is het eerste niveau van het verhaal van de broodvermenigvuldiging.
Dit is een opdracht dat ons vermogen te boven gaat, maar waaraan we toch kunnen voldoen omdat deze opdracht een bovenmenselijke, goddelijke oorsprong heeft. Dit is het tweede niveau van het verhaal.
Het derde niveau van het verhaal van de broodvermenigvuldiging is het verhaal van Jezus, de verrezen Heer, zoals dit in de eucharistie wordt verteld. De herdenking van de verrezen Heer in de eucharistie inspireert ons om het verhaal van de broodvermenigvuldiging waar te maken op alle niveaus, zodat iedereen genoeg heeft.
