Brothers and sisters, if you go out into the countryside these days, you may come across lambs in the meadows. They frolic through the grass, play with one another and follow their mother, who takes it all in stride.

In the time of the apostles, lambs were above all sacrificial animals, slaughtered to be offered to God. In the vision of John, such an innocent Lamb is precisely the one enthroned, clothed with dignity and power and possessing riches, wisdom and strength. To Him be the honour for ever and ever.

Already at the beginning of Jesus' ministry it becomes clear that He is the Lamb who will give His life. John the Baptist points Him out and says: 'Behold the Lamb of God'. The disciples who hear this follow Jesus. In today's Gospel we heard that the risen Lord Jesus asks Peter once again to follow Him. This is such a remarkable event that we must pause and reflect on it. The disciples met the Lord after His death on the cross. The Lord had already appeared to them once, but apparently they did not quite know how to respond. They were in fact somewhat disillusioned and had taken up their old occupation again: fishing. They catch nothing, until a stranger on the shore tells them to cast the net on the right side of the boat. This had happened once before in Galilee. On that occasion too, Jesus had told Simon Peter that, after toiling all night in vain, he was to cast the nets once more. And at His word they caught an enormous quantity of fish. This now happens again, and it is John, the beloved disciple, who recognises Jesus.

Something extraordinary is going on here, for when they sit at breakfast with the risen Lord, no one dares to ask: 'Who are You?'. Apparently they did not quite know how to respond. That is why, after breakfast, Jesus takes Simon aside and asks him three times whether he loves Him. Love is the foundation of ministry, of following the Lord.

The disciples have not yet received the Holy Spirit. That only happens at Pentecost. But we, brothers and sisters, received the Spirit at our baptism, and this is normally, hopefully, confirmed at Confirmation. It is up to us to recognise the Lord in all that is human, thanks to the Spirit who dwells within us. And then to bear witness to His love.

On King's Day, last week, several Catholics in Hoofddorp went to the flea market to talk with people, asking whether they would like to take part in an alpha course, an introduction to the faith and to Christian life.

On Facebook I saw a video of a young Dominican sister who explains in seven minutes who God is. There are all kinds of ways to bear witness today to the risen Lord.

When the apostles do this, it arouses jealousy among the high priests, and they forbid the apostles to teach in the name of Jesus. But the apostles continue, regardless of the consequences. At first they are set free; later some of them will pay for their actions with their lives. And even today Christians fall victim to persecutions, as in Afghanistan, Nigeria and North Korea. The bishops, successors of the apostles, continue to call for justice, peace and tolerance. The Pope has repeatedly called for peace in Ukraine. Thankfully, the spirit of helpfulness in the world is great.

In loving God with all our strength and our neighbour as ourselves lies the answer to what Jesus asks of us. Regardless of the incomprehension or resistance this may provoke. Love is at once vulnerable and powerful. The love of God asks much of us, but gives a reward so great that you cannot imagine it. That is why Holy Scripture expresses this in imagery, such as the catch of fish and in John's vision of the heavenly Lamb. In the Eucharist we can recognise Jesus and affirm with John: 'It is the Lord'. Jesus asks each of us whether we love Him and one another. And if that is so, then it is up to us to answer His call wholeheartedly: 'Follow Me'. Amen.

3e zondag van Pasen, jr. C, Xaveriuskerk

Amen.
