On Ascension Day, 19 May 1955, I made my First Holy Communion. From my Protestant grandfather and grandmother (Dutch Reformed) on my father's side I received, as they called it, a little prayer book and a rosary.

Whenever I went to Holy Mass or Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, I took both gifts with me. From my Catholic grandfather and grandmother I later received, after my Confirmation, a Latin missal. Yes, I knew it for certain; I wanted to become an altar server, to serve Jesus from very close by in the beautiful liturgy of the Holy Eucharist and in the adoration of Benediction.

When I was not scheduled to serve, I kept a close watch on the sacristan before Holy Mass for the sign of his beckoning index finger. It also happened sometimes that an altar server overslept. The sacristan had then already laid out a cassock and surplice of the right size. A surplice is a white garment that reaches down to the knees and is worn over the cassock. It belongs to the liturgical vestments.

In the past the priest prayed the epistle (first reading) and the gospel silently in Latin, and later I was allowed to read the sacred texts aloud in Dutch. My large missal with the Latin-Dutch translation served me well.

Hosts, chalice with paten, cruets, thurible with boat on Sundays, and the washing of hands; you are the servant, if you, just like me (still now), wish to serve in the sanctuary close to Jesus.

Sacristy, tabernacle, purificator and lavabo towel, chalice veil and cope are the new words that become perfectly natural in your vocabulary. The Holy Ghost / Spiritus Sanctus does His Work. You can cooperate with the Holy Ghost. At every holy Mass Jesus comes down upon the altar at the consecration. And Jesus calls once again as of old: “Children, come to Me!”

Priest: Benedicat vos omnipotens Deus, Pater et Filius et Spiritus Sanctus. All: Amen.

Or better in Dutch? Priest: May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost. All: Amen.

The new little cottas and little surplices have also been blessed and are ready for the Divine Service…. First Communicants and Confirmands, if you feel called, welcome in the sacristy, the changing room in the Begijnhof chapel.

Priester: Benedicat vos omnipotens Deus, Pater et Filius et Spiritus Sanctus. Allen: Amen.

Of beter in het Nederlands? Priester: Zegene u de almachtige God, Vader, Zoon en Heilige Geest. Allen: Amen.
