Closure of churches
When I arrived here almost a year ago in Amsterdam as your new parish priest-moderator, I was immediately told that the Augustinus church on the Postjesweg and the Vincentius church on the J. van Lennepkade would close as of 1 January 2025. I immediately entered into conversation with both parish teams and sensed that this decision had been insufficiently prepared and discussed with the faith communities concerned. My proposal at the time was to postpone that closure by a year and to invest more strongly in connection, not only between those faith communities and the pastors but also between the faith communities of the Emmaus parish among themselves (Boomkerk, Augustinus and Vincentius). Some steps have already been taken in this area, but such a process takes time. In the parish council we have therefore decided to let go of the closing date of 1 January 2026 and to review year after year how the situation evolves. At present there is no problem in finding a priest for the three churches of the Emmaus parish every Sunday. Moreover, all the presiders indicate that they gladly wish to continue their commitment.
Working group ‘Communication’
Some months ago the parish council decided to establish a ‘Communication’ working group. Both parishes are well represented in it. The activities are led by council member Peter Troon. The aim of this working group is to arrive at a joint attractive new website for both parishes. Meanwhile, in monthly meetings, a great deal of ground has already been covered, resulting in a solid basic document. With this, quotations can be requested from website builders. A great deal of work still remains to be done, but the eleven members of the working group are steadfastly intent on making it a substantively sound and easily accessible instrument. We thank them for what they have already achieved and hope — together with them — that we can be online on 1 January 2026.
One parish magazine
At present our two parishes each have their own magazine: Geloven in West in the St. Emmaus Parish (Amsterdam West) and Het Goede Nieuws in the St. Four Evangelists Parish (Amsterdam Nieuw West). The editors Marie-Louise van Oppenraaij and Linda Doornhein in West and Father Simon in Nieuw West have indicated that they wish to conclude their commitment, so that new people can take over their work as of 1 January 2026. We are immensely grateful to Marie-Louise, Linda and Father Simon for all their dedication over the past years in repeatedly producing a high-quality magazine, contacting people, writing texts, and so on. The parish council has decided to move to a joint magazine for both parishes from 2026. To that end, a new editorial team will shortly be assembled. Candidates can apply to Father Wilfried.
Working group ‘Sustainability’
Likewise, a ‘Sustainability’ working group was established in the parish council. The most important motive was the encyclical Laudato Si’ (2015) of Pope Francis, in which he brings together the ecological and the social question: caring for the environment indeed cannot be separated from our dealings with other people, in particular with the poorest of the poor. Pope Francis writes that Christians must realise that their responsibility towards creation is an essential part of their faith and that they cannot remain indifferent to the great challenges of poverty and climate change. For our two parishes we consider this a priority theme. The working group can, on the one hand, take initiatives to raise awareness among the parishioners and, on the other, study how our churches and buildings can be made more sustainable. At present we are in the phase of obtaining advice and finding out whether there are possibilities for subsidies.

Sluiting van kerken
Toen ik hier bijna een jaar geleden in Amsterdam aankwam als jullie nieuwe pastoor-moderator, kreeg ik meteen te horen dat de Augustinuskerk aan de Postjesweg en de Vincentiuskerk aan de J. van Lennepkade per 1 januari 2025 zouden sluiten. Ik ging meteen in gesprek met beide parochieteams en voelde aan dat die beslissing onvoldoende voorbereid en besproken was met de betrokken geloofsgemeenschappen. Mijn voorstel was toen om die sluiting met een jaar uit te stellen en sterker in te zetten op verbinding, niet alleen tussen die geloofsgemeenschappen en de pastores maar ook tussen de geloofsgemeenschappen van de Emmaüsparochie onderling (Boomkerk, Augustinus en Vincentius). Er zijn op dat vlak al enkele stappen gezet, maar dergelijk proces vraagt tijd. In het parochiebestuur hebben we daarom besloten om de sluitingsdatum van 1 januari 2026 los te laten en jaar na jaar te bekijken hoe de situatie evolueert. Momenteel stelt zich geen probleem om iedere zondag een priester te vinden voor de drie kerken van de Emmaüsparochie. Bovendien geven alle voorgangers aan dat ze hun engagement graag verder willen zetten.
Werkgroep ‘Communicatie’
In het parochiebestuur werd enige maanden geleden besloten een werkgroep ‘Communicatie’ in het leven te roepen. Hierin zijn de beide parochies goed vertegenwoordigd. De werkzaamheden worden geleid door bestuurslid Peter Troon. Doel van deze werkgroep is te komen tot een gezamenlijke aantrekkelijke nieuwe website voor beide parochies. Ondertussen is er, in maandelijkse vergaderingen, al een hele weg afgelegd, met een stevig basisdocument als resultaat. Daarmee kunnen offertes aangevraagd worden bij websitebouwers. Er ligt nog veel werk op de plank, maar de elf leden van de werkgroep zijn steevast van plan om er een inhoudelijk degelijk instrument van te maken dat vlot toegankelijk is. We danken hen voor wat ze reeds gepresteerd hebben en hopen — samen met hen — dat we op 1 januari 2026 online kunnen.
Eén parochieblad
Op dit ogenblik hebben onze beide parochies een eigen blad: Geloven in West in de R.K. Parochie Emmaüs (Amsterdam West) en Het Goede Nieuws in de R.K. Parochie De Vier Evangelisten (Amsterdam Nieuw West). De redactieleden Marie-Louise van Oppenraaij en Linda Doornhein in West en pater Simon in Nieuw West hebben aangegeven dat ze hun engagement willen afronden, zodat nieuwe mensen hun werk kunnen overnemen vanaf 1 januari 2026. We zijn Marie-Louise, Linda en pater Simon ontzettend dankbaar voor al hun inzet van de afgelopen jaren om telkens weer een kwaliteitsvol blad samen te stellen, mensen te contacteren, teksten te schrijven, enz. In het parochiebestuur werd besloten om vanaf 2026 te gaan naar een gezamenlijk blad voor de beide parochies. Daarvoor zal eerstdaags een nieuwe redactieploeg worden samengesteld. Kandidaten kunnen zich hiervoor aanmelden bij pastoor Wilfried.
Werkgroep ‘Verduurzaming’
Eveneens werd in het parochiebestuur een werkgroep ‘Verduurzaming’ opgericht. Het belangrijkste motief was de encycliek Laudato Si’ (2015) van paus Franciscus, waarin hij het ecologische en het sociale vraagstuk samenbrengt: zorg dragen voor het milieu kan immers niet los gezien worden van onze omgang met andere mensen, in het bijzonder met de allerarmsten. Paus Franciscus schrijft dat christenen zich moeten realiseren dat hun verantwoordelijkheid ten opzichte van de schepping een essentieel onderdeel is van hun geloof en dat ze niet onverschillig kunnen blijven bij de grote uitdagingen van armoede en klimaatverandering. Voor onze beide parochies vinden we dit een prioritair thema. De werkgroep kan enerzijds initiatieven nemen tot bewustmaking van de parochianen en anderzijds bestuderen hoe onze kerken en gebouwen duurzamer kunnen worden gemaakt. Momenteel zitten we in de fase van het inwinnen van adviezen en het uitzoeken of er subsidiemogelijkheden zijn.
