On the annual commemoration day of St. Vincent, the patron saint of our parish, this year we also pause to mark the 7th lustrum, the 35th anniversary of the current Vincentius Church.
Construction of the current Vincentius Church
After the closing and emotional demolition of the great Vincentius Church with its striking and at the same time tallest Catholic church tower in Amsterdam, an apartment complex was built there, with, on the site of the former presbytery, a new, small, intimate church space that invites one to pray, celebrate, remember and meet.
On 30 September 1990, Bishop J. Lescrauwaet (msc) consecrated the new Vincentius Church under the motto: "a sign of hope". How beautifully this connects with the Year of Hope that Pope Francis has, so to speak, proclaimed for this year!
The past 35 years
Over the past 35 years, the church and also church life have changed. Pastors and pastoral workers came and went. Some were transferred (not only in politics but also in the church, "a position elsewhere" is often heard). Other labourers in God's vineyard, sadly, we had to accompany to their final resting place. In this connection we immediately think of our "building pastor" Leo Nederstigt and pastor/former dean of Amsterdam Joop Stam, who meant so much to the parish community.
In 35 years the neighbourhood has changed, but new parishioners found the church and soon felt at home. Others moved to places outside Amsterdam, and often we had to say a definitive farewell to those who passed away. It has become crowded in heaven, but perhaps also cosy with old Vincentians.
New conductors and pianists also left and came to embellish the celebrations together with the choir members. We are very grateful for that! Singing is praying twice, we were taught long ago.
Thus it goes in life, but the faith community where people feel at home remains standing. Seeking depth in life and experiencing its meaning, alongside encounters, care and attention for one another and for the world around us, are after all the core of what faith is about. And all of this to the glory of God.
Proposed closure of the Vincentius Church
But.... like a bolt from the blue, in June 2023 we learned that the Vincentius Church had to close as of 31 December 2024. Uproar in the church, for of course we did not stand behind that. Letters were sent to the diocese, meetings convened, a film about the community recorded and published, an interview in Trouw and so on, and all this because we saw no necessity to close the church.
Of course there are no longer great numbers of churchgoers such as you would find in a large church, but celebrating and praying together precisely in this small church is important. Feeling at home together in God's house gives community. With the disappearance of Catholic schools in the parish, the young are no longer to be seen and the ages are rising, but when a church is closed, people are generally unable to find the way to another church. We have experienced that with other parish churches such as the Vondel and de Liefde. Only a single person remains. People feel abandoned.
Naturally, finances are also important; the collections do not bring in enough, but the Vincentius can compensate for this through the many lettings to musicians who can give their (pupils') performances here, and through the income from the (rental) proceeds of former parish properties.
Practically all the work is done by volunteers. Keeping a church functioning is like a household: much is involved, but with people willing to put their shoulders to it unpaid, everything remains standing.
Good news
At the top of this article it says: looking back and looking ahead. The sign of hope remains standing, for recently we learned that the (new) pastor, Fr. Wilfried Wambeke, came with good news after a conversation with the bishop. For the time being the Vincentius stays open, and from year to year it will be assessed whether that can remain possible. We are happy and grateful for that. Also for the fact that time and again we can count on several former missionaries (the Fathers Janssen, Mulders and Noom) to also preside among us. Their ages are rising, but God must simply ensure that they remain able to do so. It is not up to them; they gladly come.
St. Vincent (1581-1660) was a French priest and founder of the Lazarists. He devoted himself to the care of the poor. He was canonized in 1737 by Pope Clement XII.
On Sunday 28 September next there will be a modest celebration in connection with the Vincentius feast (the day of death of Saint Vincent de Paul falls on 27 September), but...... we look forward to October 2026, because that is when we will commemorate the Vincentius existing as a parish for 125 years, Dv.
That is a celebration we all surely want to experience!!!!

Terugblikken én vooruitzien
Bij de jaarlijkse gedenkdag van de H. Vincentius, de patroon van onze parochie, staan we dit jaar ook stil bij het 7e lustrum, het 35 jarig bestaan van de huidige Vincentiuskerk.
Bouw huidige Vincentiuskerk
Na het sluiten en emotionele afbreken van de grote Vincentiuskerk met de markante en tevens hoogste katholieke kerktoren van Amsterdam, kwam daar een appartementencomplex met, op de plaats van de voormalige pastorie, een nieuwe, kleine, intieme kerkruimte die uitnodigt voor bidden, vieren, gedenken en ontmoeten.
Op 30 september 1990 heeft Mgr. J. Lescrauwaet (msc) de nieuwe Vincentiuskerk ingewijd onder het motto: “een teken van hoop”. Wat sluit dit mooi aan bij het jaar van de Hoop dat paus Franciscus zg. voor dit jaar heeft uitgeroepen!
De afgelopen 35 jaar
In de afgelopen 35 jaar is de kerk en ook het kerkzijn veranderd. Zo kwamen en gingen er pastores en pastoraal werkenden. Sommigen werden overgeplaatst (niet alleen in de politiek maar ook in de kerk is “functie elders” vaak te horen). Andere werknemers in Gods’ wijngaard moesten we jammergenoeg begeleiden naar hun laatste rustplaats. Daarbij denken we meteen aan onze “bouwpastoor” Leo Nederstigt en pastor/oud deken van Amsterdam Joop Stam, die zo belangrijk zijn geweest voor de parochiegemeenschap.
In 35 jaar is de buurt veranderd, maar nieuwe parochianen vonden de kerk en voelden zich al snel thuis. Anderen verhuisden naar plaatsen buiten Amsterdam en vaak moesten wij definitief afscheid nemen van hen die van ons heengingen. Het is druk geworden in de hemel, maar misschien ook wel gezellig met oude Vincentianen.
Ook gingen en kwamen er nieuwe dirigenten en pianisten om samen met de koorleden de vieringen op te luisteren. Daar zijn we heel dankbaar voor! Zingen is dubbel bidden leerden we vroeger al.
Zo gaat het in het leven, maar de geloofsgemeenschap waar mensen zich thuis voelen blijft overeind. Verdieping in het leven zoeken en de zin ervan ervaren, naast ontmoetingen, zorg en aandacht hebben voor elkaar en de wereld om ons heen zijn toch de kernpunten waar het in het geloof om draait. En dit alles ter ere van God.
Voorgenomen sluiting Vincentiuskerk
Maar.... als een donderslag bij heldere hemel kregen we in juni 2023 te horen dat de Vincentiuskerk per 31 december 2024 moest sluiten. Opstand in de kerk, want uiteraard stonden we daar niet achter. Er gingen brieven naar het bisdom, vergaderingen belegd, film over de gemeenschap opgenomen en gepubliceerd, interview in Trouw enz. en dit allemaal omdat we geen noodzaak zagen om de kerk te sluiten.
Natuurlijk zijn er geen grote aantallen kerkgangers meer die je in een grote kerk niet meer terug vindt, maar juist in deze kleine kerk met elkaar vieren en bidden is belang- rijk. Je bij elkaar in Gods huis thuis voelen geeft gemeenschap. Met het wegvallen van katholieke scholen in de parochie is ook de jeugd niet terug te zien en de leeftijden worden hoger, maar als de kerk gesloten zou gaan worden zijn mensen doorgaans niet in staat de weg naar een andere kerk te vinden. Dat hebben we ervaren met andere parochiekerken zoals de Vondel en de Liefde. Slechts een enkeling blijft ervan over. Men voelt zich in de steek gelaten.
Uiteraard zijn financiën ook belangrijk, de collectes brengen niet genoeg op, maar de Vincentius kan dit compenseren door de vele verhuren aan musici die hier hun (leerlingen)uitvoeringen kunnen geven en door de inkomsten uit de (huur)opbrengsten van oude parochiebezittingen.
Praktisch alle werkzaamheden worden verricht door vrijwilligers. Het laten functioneren van een kerk is net als een huishouding, daar komt veel bij kijken, maar met mensen die onbetaald er de schouders eronder willen zetten blijft alles overeind.
Goed nieuws
Boven dit artikel staat: terugblikken en vooruitzien. Het teken van hoop blijft overeind, want onlangs vernamen we dat de (nieuwe) pastoor, pater Wilfried Wambeke, na een gesprek met de bisschop met goed nieuws kwam. Voorlopig blijft de Vincentius open en van jaar tot jaar wordt bekeken of dat mogelijk kan blijven. Daar zijn we blij en dankbaar om. Ook over het feit dat we iedere keer weer mogen rekenen op enkele oudmissionarissen (de paters Janssen, Mulders en Noom) om ook bij ons voor te gaan. Hun leeftijden stijgen, maar God moet er maar voor zorgen dat zij ertoe in staat blijven. Aan hen ligt het niet, zij komen graag.
Sint Vincentius (1581-1660) was een Frans geestelijke en stichter van de Lazaristen. Hij legde zich toe op de armenzorg. Hij werd in 1737 heilig verklaard door paus Clemens XII.
Zondag 28 september a.s. is er een bescheiden feestje in verband met het Vincentiusfeest (de sterfdag van de heilige Vincentius a Paulo is op 27 september), maar...... we kijken uit naar oktober 2026, omdat we dan gaan herdenken dat de Vincentius als parochie 125 jaar bestaat, Dv.
Dat feest willen we toch allemaal meemaken!!!!
