As members of a religious community, we know that we are part of a broad project. For us, Salesians of Don Bosco, that is the Salesian 'province' of Flanders and the Netherlands. It will not surprise you that the number of Salesians has declined sharply in recent decades and that there is little growth from new brothers. Out of necessity, communities are being closed and the available (young) brothers are being redistributed. After eight years in Amsterdam, Father Simon received the request from the provincial to move to the Salesian community in Ostend.
For Father Simon, this is a new challenge. He will be partly engaged in youth ministry and partly in the parishes of Ostend and Bredene in the Diocese of Bruges.
In Amsterdam, Father Simon will not be replaced. This also presents the three other priests with the challenge of redistributing tasks and finding people for tasks that do not necessarily belong to the priests' responsibilities. Fortunately, in both parishes there are very many volunteers who gladly wish to mean something for the Church.
Many will miss Father Simon. He will preside one last time at the Boomkerk on Sunday 3 August and at the Pauluskerk on Sunday 10 August. On 15 August he will begin a new chapter in his life. We thank him wholeheartedly for his dedicated commitment and his witness as a priest in our parishes. For many people, he will be remembered as the priest who was close to them at important moments in their life of faith: at a baptism, at the preparation of children and young people for first communion and confirmation, at a funeral. We are convinced that in Ostend, too, he will be able to lead many faithful and accompany them in their growth in faith. Let us pray that God may bless the apostolate of His servant, Father Simon.

Afscheid van pastor Simon
Als lid van een kloostergemeenschap weten we dat we deel uitmaken van een breed project. Voor ons, paters Salesianen van Don Bosco, is dat de salesiaanse ‘provincie’ Vlaanderen en Nederland. Het zal u niet verbazen dat het aantal Salesianen de afgelopen decennia sterk gedaald is en dat er weinig aangroei is van nieuwe medebroeders. Noodgedwongen worden gemeenschappen opgeheven en worden de beschikbare (jonge) medebroeders herverdeeld. Na acht jaar Amsterdam kreeg pastor Simon de vraag van de provinciaal om te verhuizen naar de salesiaanse gemeenschap in Oostende.
Voor pastor Simon is dit een nieuwe uitdaging. Hij zal er deels ingeschakeld worden in het jongerenwerk en deels in de parochies van Oostende en Bredene in het bisdom Brugge.
In Amsterdam zal pastor Simon niet vervangen worden. Dat stelt de drie andere pastores eveneens voor de uitdaging om taken te herverdelen en mensen te zoeken voor taken die niet noodzakelijk tot het pakket van de pastores behoren. Gelukkig zijn er in beide parochies heel veel vrijwilligers die graag iets willen betekenen voor de kerk.
Velen zullen pastor Simon missen. Hij zal op zondag 3 augustus een laatste keer voorgaan in de Boomkerk en op zondag 10 augustus in de Pauluskerk. Op 15 augustus begint hij dan aan een nieuw hoofdstuk in zijn leven. We danken hem van harte voor zijn gedreven inzet en zijn getuigenis als priester in onze parochies. Voor heel wat mensen zal hij herinnerd worden als de priester die hen nabij was op belangrijke momenten in hun geloofsleven: bij een doopsel, bij de voorbereiding van kinderen en jongeren op de eerste communie en het vormsel, bij een uitvaart. We zijn ervan overtuigd dat hij ook in Oostende veel gelovigen zal kunnen voorgaan en begeleiden in hun geloofsgroei. Laten we bidden dat God het apostolaat van zijn dienaar pastor Simon mag zegenen.
