Intern catechist Iris introduces herself

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Iris Maas-Bremer and since 01-11-2025 I have been doing an internship in the parishes of De 4 Evangelisten and Emmaüs, as part of a catechist training programme at the St. Boniface Institute in the diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam.
This internship will last 2 years and aims to familiarise me with catechesis, pastoral care and diaconia. During the first 3 months I took part in various activities, such as the preparation for first communion in the Pauluskerk and the Boomkerk, a children's liturgy of the word, the distribution of food to the poor, and pastoral conversations. I also attended a house celebration of parishioners of het Nieuw Verbond, a celebration in the Leo Polakhuis, and a Liturgy of the Word and prayer service in the Augustinuskerk with the distribution of communion. In the coming months I will take on tasks more actively.
The reason I decided to do this training was that I became a Catholic in 2013 and felt the need to deepen my knowledge of the Catholic faith even further by studying theology. During my studies I was asked whether I might like to become a catechist. I have now completed the bachelor phase of my studies and am therefore now doing my internships.
I did not grow up as a child with the Catholic faith. At the age of 25 I was baptised and, as a Protestant, began my Christian life path. In 2012 I received a rosary and hung it up in my room. Shortly afterwards, through a friend, I came into contact with Opus Dei, where I became acquainted with the Catholic faith. When I then began to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church, my heart was touched by the language that came to me, and there was no way back for me. I think that the presence of the rosary, as well as the language of the Catechism and the prayers of others, guided me on my way to reception into the Catholic Church. Since 10-05-2020 I have been attached as an associate to the Community of the Sacramentines in the Begijnhof, where I am allowed to serve as an acolyte every Friday afternoon.
In 2020 I made a cathedral trip with a group of Catholics in Paris, during which we also visited the Sacré Cœur, where perpetual adoration has taken place since 1885. As I looked at the widely outstretched arms of Jesus in the dome above the altar, I remembered that I had stood in that very place before — when I was 18 years old — and had then experienced a special feeling, which I did not understand at the time. Now, standing 33 years later in that same place, an immense power overwhelmed me, and I saw an enormous monstrance hanging in that same dome, and I understood what I had felt as an 18-year-old but had not yet understood then: the power of the Eucharist and of adoration.
For me, the Eucharist is the most intimate communion we can have with Jesus
Especially the words which, unfortunately, the priest often says in silence: "water and wine become one, You share in our humanity and take us up into Your divine life", express exactly for me what it is all about. Man is meant to share in the life of God, and we are already allowed to anticipate this now in the Eucharist. For me, the Eucharist touches upon the longing for eternal life. This is why I have also learned to appreciate adoration as an extension of the Eucharist and as a way of letting Jesus be present in the community in the most intimate manner. In Amsterdam, adoration is practised in various places. It would be beautiful if more churches joined in, so that one day perpetual adoration could also take place in the Miracle City of Amsterdam.
