What was for you the moment or the event that made you think: I want to be baptized in the Catholic Church?
It was a number of things that led to that. For years I had felt the need to join an active faith community, and I also often attended the services of an evangelical church. When my son Noah had found the Boomkerk on his own initiative and wanted to be baptized there (Noah was baptized in the Boomkerk in July 2025 and afterwards became an altar server in this church), I became curious about the Masses and the customs there. I then went along a few times and noticed that I had to get used to the other way of professing the faith. Gradually I could understand the customs and rituals better and better, and they gained content and meaning for me. When I asked whether I could also become part of this church and possibly be baptized, it seemed as if a kind of red carpet was rolled out for me. I felt enormously welcome, received all the attention from you, Father Andy, who spent much time on our conversations to make me more at home in the Catholic faith and the rituals of the Holy Mass.
How did you experience the moment of baptism itself; what went through you when you received the water?
I underwent the baptism itself as a consciously made appointment in advance, a kind of commitment in which I could show and experience my mid. During the service, and also during the baptism itself, I was present in a practical and level-headed way, and that felt good. After the baptism I do not feel an essential change in myself. My life continues as it was, which after all I have lived on my own for some 47 years. I do find it pleasant now to be officially part of this parish, to sing along on Sundays, to go to communion and to actively think along & help with the practical things the church wants to shape. It gives me a feeling of being less of an outsider, which is how I had seen myself for years. I very much wanted to be part of an active and committed community, and that now comes together beautifully. How were you received by the parish and what role does the church community play in your experience of faith?
It truly felt like an exceptionally warm welcome, like a red carpet over which I may continue to walk. Dear people, both in the organization and among the visitors. Coming together, cooking together, together giving content to our Christian values; they are all things that give a practical shape to my view of our society. Which aspects of the faith or the church would you like to explore further or deepen in the time ahead?
Actually I have just said it: especially the practical and concrete things appeal to me most now. And I am curious about a further experience and shaping of the spiritual and ritual parts of the faith. What I also find a nice idea is the name Francis of Assisi, as 'shepherd' of the animals on this earth. In Frankrijk is die tendens heel sterk: daar zijn tijdens en rond de Paaswake van dit jaar meer dan 21.000 volwassenen katholiek geworden. Wat was voor jou het moment of de gebeurtenis waardoor je dacht: ik wil me laten dopen in de katholieke kerk?
Het was een aantal dingen die daartoe hebben geleid. Al jaren voelde ik de behoefte om me aan te sluiten bij een actieve geloofsgemeenschap, en ik bezocht ook vaak de diensten van een evangelische kerk. Toen mijn zoon Noah op eigen initiatief de Boomkerk had gevonden, en zich daar wilde laten dopen (Noah werd in de Boomkerk gedoopt in juli 2025 en is daarna misdienaar geworden in deze kerk), raakte ik benieuwd naar de missen en de gebruiken daar. Ik ben toen een paar keer meegegaan en merkte dat ik moest wennen aan de andere manier van het geloof belijden. Gaandeweg kon ik de gewoontes en rituelen steeds beter begrijpen en kregen ze inhoud en betekenis voor me. Op mijn vraag of ik ook deel kon worden van deze kerk en me eventueel zou kunnen laten dopen, leek het wel alsof er een soort rode loper voor me werd uitgerold. Ik voelde me enorm welkom, kreeg alle aandacht van jou, pater Andy, die veel tijd hebt besteed aan onze gesprekken om mij meer wegwijs te maken in het katholieke geloof en de rituelen van de heilige mis.
Hoe heb je het moment van de doop zelf ervaren; wat ging er door je heen toen je het water ontving?
De doop zelf heb ik ondergaan als een vooraf bewust gemaakte afspraak, een soort commitment waarin ik mijn mid kon tonen en beleven. Tijdens de dienst, en ook tijdens de doop zelf, was ik op een praktische en nuchtere manier aanwezig, en dat voelde goed. Ik vond het fijn dat het water niet zo koud was (dankjewel Andy!) en dat mijn haar niet nat werd...;-). Heel
In hoeverre voelt je dagelijks leven nu anders dan voorheen? Merk je dat je anders naar de wereld kijkt?
Na de doop voel ik niet een wezenlijke verandering in mezelf. Mijn leven gaat verder zoals het was, wat ik immers al zo’n 47 jaar zo zelf leef. Wel vind ik het fijn om nu ook officieel deel van deze parochie te zijn, mee te zingen op zondag, ter communie te gaan en actief mee te denken & te helpen met de praktische dingen die de kerk wil vormgeven. Het geeft me een gevoel wat minder buitenstaander te zijn, wat ik jarenlang zo heb gezien. Ik wilde heel graag onderdeel zijn van een actieve en betrokken gemeenschap en dat komt nu heel mooi bij elkaar. Zeker ook als ik bedenk dat mijn vader vroeger al actief lid was bij de katholieke kerk.
Hoe ben je ontvangen door de parochie en welke rol speelt de kerkgemeenschap in jouw geloofsbeleving?
Het voelde dus echt als een bijzonder warm welkom, als een rode loper waarover ik verder mag wandelen. Lieve mensen, zowel in de organisatie als bij de bezoekers. Samenkomen, samen koken, samen inhoud geven aan onze christelijke waarden, het zijn allemaal dingen die een praktische invulling geven aan mijn kijk op onze samenleving. Ook mijn vriend / toekomstige man Mark is blij aan te kunnen sluiten in die benadering. We zien met vertrouwen en tevredenheid uit naar pe y onze bijdragen aan De Boom. De Toekomst
Welke aspecten van het geloof of de kerk wil je de komende tijd verder gaan ontdekken of verdiepen?
Eigenlijk heb ik het net al gezegd: vooral de praktische en concrete dingen spreken me nu het meeste aan. En ik ben nieuwsgierig naar een verdere beleving en invulling van de spirituele en rituele onderdelen van het geloof. Wat ik ook een fijn idee vind, is de naam Franciscus van Assisi, als ‘herder’ van de dieren op deze aarde.
