Soon it will be Ascension Day. The day of the traditional 'dew walking'. Is that not rather earthly, walking barefoot through the grass? Although I have never experienced it, I generally find it delightful to walk barefoot! The feeling of the changing ground beneath my feet has something essential about it, even if 'dew' is usually the residue of the raindrops that fall from the sky in the area where we live...

What also often ascends to heaven here are aircraft flying to and fro. For the coming May holiday, thousands of flying holidays have again been booked, and many people can hardly wait to ascend to heaven, even if only temporarily.

It reminds me of our hotel where we stayed during our last trip: the lift whooshed up the outside of the building like a kind of glass capsule. While I had the feeling that I myself was ascending to heaven, I saw the world beneath me rapidly grow smaller. And to be honest: the view from that lift was heavenly!

Ascension Day is of course about the ascension into heaven of Jesus. What a spectacle that must have been! It was in itself already a miracle that He remained among His disciples in the forty days after His death, let alone that He ascended to heaven in their midst.

But it will surely not go that fast, with that heaven. I doubt whether heaven is a place to which we travel bodily - or ascend - after death, where Saint Peter, with the key of heaven's gate at his belt, checks whether you are duly recorded in the book of reservations. Then I find it easier to understand if the journey to heaven turns out to be a spiritual path.

It is also sometimes said that we must make heaven ourselves. Simply, here on earth, by realizing that heaven with and for one another. An intriguing thought. For nothing prevents us from making our world a little better and more beautiful, for and with one another. In that way, we can surely all rise above ourselves. And in that sense, it surely brings us all a little closer to heaven...

Hemels!
