Silver Grain of Wheat for Father Gerard Noom

On 8 February we celebrated the 65th anniversary of Father Noom's priesthood. Together with Father Frans Mulders he presided over the celebration of the Eucharist. Gerard Noom was born in 1934 and looks back with love on his youth in the Zaanstreek, as the seventh child in a family of nine. From a very early age it became clear to him that he wanted to become a missionary.
On 11 February 1961 Father Noom was ordained a priest; he was affiliated with the SMA (Society of African Missions) and spent a considerable part of his priestly life in Africa, among other places in Ghana but also on the south-eastern side of Africa, in Zambia. At the age of 65 he returned definitively to the Netherlands – after 38 years – but remained of service even after his retirement. He has led many celebrations of the Eucharist and will now withdraw, after 65 active years. As a thank-you for his many years of service, Father Noom was presented with a cheque on behalf of the parishioners of De Graankorrel and the general board C & F.
The money is intended for a specific purpose, to be determined by him. As a token of appreciation, the local board of De Graankorrel hung the Silver Grain of Wheat around Father Noom's neck and thanked him for his commitment to the parish and to the elderly in care complexes.
After receiving many congratulations, there was a pleasant gathering in the Geinzaal with delicious snacks, drinks and coffee/tea. After the festive gathering, Father Noom took home the beautiful floral tribute from this celebration.

Zilveren Graankorrel voor pater Gerard Noom
Op 8 februari hebben we het 65-jarig priesterschap van pater Noom gevierd. Samen met pater Frans Mulders ging hij voor in de eucharistieviering. Gerard Noom werd in 1934 geboren en denkt met liefde terug aan zijn jeugd in de Zaanstreek, als zevende kind in een gezin van negen. Het werd hem al heel vroeg duidelijk dat hij missionaris wilde worden.
Op 11 februari 1961 was de priesterwijding van pater Noom, hij was verbonden aan de SMA (Sociëteit voor Afrikaanse Missiën) en heeft een aanzienlijk deel van zijn priesterleven in Afrika doorgebracht, onder andere in Ghana maar ook aan de zuidoostkant van Afrika, in Zambia. Op zijn 65e keerde hij - na 38 jaar - definitief terug naar Nederland maar bleef ook na zijn emeritaat dienstbaar. Hij heeft vele eucharistievieringen geleid en zal zich nu terugtrekken, na 65 actieve jaren. Als dank voor zijn jarenlange dienstbaarheid werd aan pater Noom, namens de parochianen van De Graankorrel en het algemeen bestuur C & F, een cheque aangeboden.
Het geld is bestemd voor een specifiek doel, door hem te bepalen. Het locatiebestuur van De Graankorrel hing pater Noom – als blijk van waardering – de Zilveren Graankorrel om en dankte hem voor zijn inzet voor de parochie en voor ouderen in zorgcomplexen.
Na vele felicitaties ontvangen te hebben, was er in de Geinzaal een gezellige ontmoeting met heerlijke hapjes, drankjes en koffie/thee. Pater Noom kreeg na het feestelijk samenzijn de prachtige bloemengroet van deze viering mee naar huis.
