When we have children here preparing for their First Holy Communion, it is sometimes sad to notice that there are children who do not know that Christmas has to do with the birth of Jesus Christ.
Every year I visit the schools in the neighbourhood to advertise our Christmas play for children, the rocking of the Child. I asked whether I might hang up a poster for this Christmas play, but that was not allowed, said the caretaker. ‘We need all the space for the Christmas decorations,’ he told me. And that while Christmas is precisely about Jesus.
The birth of Jesus changed the history of the world. All of Europe was originally Christian, but faith is declining worldwide in the Western world, often because of our prosperity. As a result, people think they no longer need faith, because things are going well anyway! Yet we have learned from Jesus to love God and our fellow human beings. And even our enemies, if we can manage it.
There is an increase of young people, of teenagers who want to become Catholic again. At the Catholic youth day in Ede on 8 November this year about 700 young people had come and 120 priests. They met one another, had workshops, encouraged one another and celebrated the Eucharist together. The shepherds, the simple ones, are the first to receive the message of the birth of Jesus. The man who would change the history of this world forever and still changes it.
In every celebration of the Eucharist Jesus is, as it were, born anew on the altar and also in our hearts. We as believers are also little messengers of joy because we carry the life of Jesus within us and can give it to this world. Every day. We too can give our lives for God and for one another. That is our secret. To live not only for ourselves but also for the other. Then we too can be little princes of peace, and at least in our surroundings there is no quarrelling but peace, or renewed reconciliation. Then it is truly a Blessed Christmas for everyone.

Uit de preek op Kerstavond in de Kapel - De geboorte van Jezus
Om deze preek voor te bereiden zat ik gisteravond hier in de kapel bij de preekstoel. Ik liet zo mijn gedachten gaan over kerstmis en over de lezingen vandaag.
Het is prachtig om alle vrijwilligers te zien en hun inzet die het vieren van Kerstmis mogelijk maken. Ook dames van het Begijnhof hebben zich ingezet. De kerstboom versieren, de stal opzetten, de kandelaars poetsen, de liturgieboekjes verzorgen en de muzikanten, het kerstbrood smeren. Te veel om op te noemen. En dat is allemaal nodig. Maar hoe mooi het ook allemaal is geworden, het is niet het belangrijkste van Kerstmis.
Als we hier kinderen hebben die zich voorbereiden op hun Heilige Communie, is het soms verdrietig om te merken dat er kinderen zijn die niet weten dat Kerstmis met de geboorte van Jezus Christus te maken heeft.
Elk jaar ga ik langs de scholen in de buurt om reclame te maken voor ons kerstspel voor kinderen, het kindje wiegen. Ik vroeg of ik een poster mocht ophangen voor dit kerstspel maar dat mocht niet zei de conciërge. ‘Wij hebben alle ruimte nodig voor de kerstversiering’ liet hij mij weten. En dat terwijl kerstmis nu juist om Jezus draait.
De geboorte van Jezus heeft de geschiedenis van de wereld veranderd. Heel Europa was van oorsprong christelijk maar het geloof neemt wereldwijd af in de westerse wereld, vaak door onze welvaart. Hierdoor denken mensen het geloof niet meer nodig te hebben want het gaat toch goed! Toch hebben wij van Jezus geleerd om God en onze medemensen lief te hebben. En zelfs onze vijanden, als we dit kunnen opbrengen.
Er is een toename van jongeren, van tieners die weer katholiek willen worden. Tijdens de katholieke jongerendag in Ede op 8 november dit jaar waren er ongeveer 700 jongeren gekomen en 120 priesters. Zij hebben elkaar ontmoet, hadden workshops, hebben elkaar bemoedigd en hebben samen Eucharistie gevierd. Zij willen weer terug naar de oorsprong van het geloof, Contactblad voor de gemeenschap van de Begijnhofkapel authentiek geloof, een viering zoals het hoort en ook de lezingen uit de Bijbel en over het leven van Jezus. Zij willen een persoonlijke relatie opbouwen met Jezus. Hij kan hun leven vervullen en geluk geven. Dit geldt niet alleen voor de jongeren maar ook voor ons.
Door het leven van Jezus ontvangen wij een groot licht waarover de eerste lezing van de profeet Jesaja spreekt. Het geloof in Jezus geeft ons ook houvast in het leven waarin tegenwoordig alles op losse schroeven lijkt te staan. Oorlogen, natuurrampen en noem maar op.
Jezus heeft zijn leven voor ons gegeven om ons te bevrijden van een leven dat nog niet helemaal volmaakt is.
Jozef en Maria trekken naar Bethlehem. Volkstelling. Maria hoogzwanger. Wat een geloof. Jezus geboren in een kribbe, een voerbak in een stal, geen plaats in de herberg. De herders, de eenvoudigen, ontvangen het eerst de boodschap van de geboorte van Jezus. De mens die de geschiedenis van deze wereld voorgoed zou veranderen en nog steeds verandert.
In elke Eucharistieviering wordt Jezus als het ware opnieuw geboren op het altaar en ook in onze harten. Wij als gelovigen zijn ook kleine vreugdeboden doordat wij het leven van Jezus in ons meedragen en aan deze wereld kunnen geven. Elke dag. Ook wij kunnen ons leven voor God en voor elkaar geven. Dat is ons geheim. Niet alleen voor onszelf leven maar ook voor de ander. Dan kunnen wij ook kleine vredevorsten zijn en is er in ieder geval in onze omgeving geen ruzie maar vrede of opnieuw verzoening. Dan is het pas een Zalig Kerstmis voor iedereen.
