In een tijd en een wereld ‘waarin de derde wereldoorlog stukje bij beetje wordt uitgevochten moeten we vredestichters zijn in een donkere nacht’(paus Franciscus). Oorlogen in Oekraïne, Palestina, Oost-Congo en Soedan o.a. met zeer vele slachtoffers en grote milieuschade. Met de VN feitelijk aan de zijlijn en grote wereldmachten die hun zaakjes regelen buiten het internationale recht om, dat met name na de wereldoorlogen in de 20e eeuw, vaste voet scheen te hebben gekregen. Wie of wat houdt Poetin, Xi, Trump of Netanyahu aan het recht?
Met dit alles voor ogen inspireerde paus Leo XIV de gelovigen op 1 januari jl. met zijn vredesboodschap op de 58ste Dag van de Vrede. Daarin hield hij een lichtend betoog om als kerk, als leerlingen van Christus, Zijn vrede te zoeken, erin te geloven en deze te verspreiden.
Een ongewapende vrede, waar zijn leerlingen niet aan wilden. ‘Doe je dolk weg’ (Mt. 26,52) zei 9 Hij tegen Petrus toen deze hem wilde verdedigen. Hij moet hen toch zijn voorgegaan op een weg van vrede maar toen het erop aan kwam… koos Petrus voor geweld.
Het is voor ons mensen gewoon. Emoties als ongeduld, jaloezie, boosheid. En van daaruit reageren naar elkaar. Daarom zegt paus Leo dat we zijn vrede in ons moeten toelaten en inoefenen. Daarbij het voorbeeld van Christus en heiligen als Franciscus voor ogen houdend. En dan ons in een houding van dialoog aansluiten bij de beweging voor vrede die ook gaande is (bijvoorbeeld via Pax). We moeten dringend bidden om vrede in ons hart, maar ook wérken aan vrede. De cultuur van de dood terugdringen (paus Johannes Paulus II).
Wat betekent dit voor ons nu? Moeten we bijvoorbeeld kritiekloos meegaan met die 5% verhoging van onze defensie-uitgaven?
