That was on 2 July 1671, and since 2021 we have celebrated it. Admittedly with a year's delay due to corona, but that was simply how it was at the time.
For the first time we celebrated it together with the French-speaking community. It was therefore also a bilingual Mass. That sometimes causes some confusion, but it certainly has its charm too. Because of this the chapel was also packed. And since the company was therefore too large for the Hof, we could and were allowed to hold the reception in the English church. That was literally a gift from God, for in all the previous years when we celebrated it on the Hof itself the weather was beautiful; this time it certainly was not. It was raining cats and dogs.
It was also nice that quite a few people brought all sorts of (especially homemade) food, so it became a true culinary feast.
Dieszondag is also seized upon immediately to put some volunteers in the spotlight. They receive the much-coveted Beguinage pin, complete with certificate.
This year there were 2 lucky recipients.
First, Trees van Vliet was honoured. Together with her husband Jos van Vliet she came to help at the chapel and the presbytery from 1997 onwards. This at the request of Father Jan van Burgsteden (as he then still was). This concerned all kinds of practical and household matters. Also after her husband's death. Her passion for the flowers in the chapel must not go unmentioned. All of this has been greatly appreciated by the fathers, and so it is also a very deserved honour.

He did this with flair, despite his busy schedule. Among other things he was involved with other churches in the city centre and with drawing up the budget, together with the treasurer. He provided rest, stability and conviviality in the board. The board will sincerely miss him.
Father Pieter had turned 60 in June, and we celebrated this today as well. Among other things he received a new alb and a beautiful stole. We are curious when we shall see them during a Mass.
All in all, despite the disappointing weather, it was a very enjoyable day. Again next year, shall we say, but hopefully then with a bit of sunshine.

Dieszondag
Het begint al een echte traditie te worden. Dieszondag. De dag dat we de eerste steenlegging van de Begijnhofkapel vieren. Dat was op 2 juli 1671 en vanaf 2021 vieren wij dat. Weliswaar met een jaartje vertraging door corona, maar dat was toen nu eenmaal zo.
Voor het eerst hebben we het gevierd samen met de Franstalige gemeenschap. Het was daarom ook een tweetalige mis. Dat geeft soms wat verwarring, maar heeft ook zeker zijn charme. De kapel zat hierdoor ook stampvol. En omdat het gezelschap daardoor te groot werd voor op het Hof, konden en mochten we de receptie houden in de Engelse kerk. Dat was letterlijk een Godsgeschenk, want alle voorgaande jaren dat we het op het Hof zelf vierden was het prachtig weer; dat was het nu zeker niet. Het regende pijpenstelen.
Het leuke was ook dat best veel mensen allerlei (vooral zelfgemaakt) eten meenamen, dus het werd een heel culinair festijn.
De Dieszondag wordt ook meteen aangegrepen om wat vrijwilligers in het zonnetje te zetten. Zij krijgen de felbegeerde Begijnhof speld, compleet met certificaat.
Dit jaar waren er 2 gelukkigen.
Als eerste werd Trees van Vliet onderscheiden. Zij kwam samen met haar man Jos van Vliet vanaf 1997 helpen bij de kapel en de pastorie. Dit op verzoek van (toen nog) pater Jan van Burgsteden. Dit betrof allerlei praktische en huishoudelijke zaken. Ook na het overlijden van haar man. Haar passie voor de bloemen in de kapel mag niet onvermeld blijven. Dit alles is door de paters zeer gewaardeerd, en dus ook een zeer terechte onderscheiding.
Contactblad voor de gemeenschap van de Begijnhofkapel t 25 – september 2025 Als tweede werd Hans Moltmaker onderscheiden. Hij is vanaf 2018 de secretaris geweest van het bestuur van de Begijnhofkapel. Dat heeft hij met verve gedaan, ondanks zijn drukke bezigheden. Hij hield zich o.a. bezig met andere kerken in de binnenstad en het opzetten van de begroting, samen met de penningmeester. Hij zorgde voor 1 rust, stabiliteit en gezelligheid in het bestuur. Het bestuur zal hem oprecht gaan missen.
Pater Pieter was in juni 60 jaar geworden, en ook dit vierden wij vandaag. Hij heeft o.a. een nieuwe albe en een prachtige stola gekregen. Benieuwd wanneer we die gaan zien tijdens een mis.
Al met al was het, ondanks het tegenvallende weer, een hele leuke dag. Volgend jaar weer, zullen we maar zeggen, maar hopelijk dan wel met een zonnetje.
