We are still in the middle of summer as I write this piece from our holiday address in France. We spent the first week in the Italian Alps and, as always in France, it is a special experience to visit centuries-old churches there, often richly decorated.
Everyone who enters is somehow touched by the serenity and the beautiful paintings and statues of saints and Christ. You do not need to know the faith to experience it. Nor do you need to be able to read (Latin) to take in something of the story of Christ and all the people who followed Him as saints. This is what makes Catholic churches so different from the Protestant ones, which you find mainly in Northern Europe, including the Netherlands.
There are some beautiful church buildings, but when you go inside, it is always a search for any image or decoration with meaning. The Catholic faith, precisely, owes its existence to the richly decorated buildings, because people's experience of faith is connected with them. With the closing and repurposing of Catholic churches in the Netherlands, you are in fact demolishing the Catholic faith.
And once gone, it is gone forever, for unlike our neighbouring countries, where the government finances the maintenance of churches, in the Netherlands the lion's share of the maintenance costs is borne by the parishioners. Fortunately, with our church we have managed to achieve a situation in which we can pay for the maintenance through income from rentals and subsidies.
You would wish more parishes this situation. Unfortunately, within the Diocese there is little attention for it. The consequence is that church buildings are needlessly lost or repurposed into, for example, a skate rink, café-restaurant, homes or a theatre. To prevent the Hofkerk from meeting this fate, we shall have to get to work on a new plan for the future within the partnership.
In the previous Hofnieuws I had written that a working group has been formed from the Parish Meeting (PV) which has set to work on this. The presentation of the draft plan was first to take place in June, but has now been moved to the second half of September.
Meanwhile, the pastoral team has also set to work on a pastoral plan for the entire partnership. Part of it will be a profile sketch per location, drawn up in cooperation with each parish. For our church, reference is made to the slogan “Through beauty to faith”. As far as I am concerned, a fitting characterization of our location. Now it is about filling it in. The aim is to let new people find their way to our church to experience the richness of the Catholic faith. Will you help? The invitation to the parish meeting about the parish plan will be announced shortly via email, the Newsletter and the announcements on Sunday. I hope that many of you will be able to attend this important meeting.

We zitten nog midden in de zomer als ik dit stukje vanuit ons vakantieadres in Frankrijk schrijf. De eerste week hebben wij doorgebracht in de Italiaanse Alpen en het is net als in Frankrijk altijd een bijzondere ervaring om daar eeuwenoude kerken te bezoeken die vaak rijk versierd zijn.
Iedereen die er naar binnen komt wordt op de een of andere manier geraakt door de sereniteit en de prachtige schilderijen en beelden van heiligen en Christus. Je hoeft niet het geloof te kennen om het te ervaren. Je hoeft ook niet (Latijn) te kunnen lezen om iets mee te krijgen van het verhaal van Christus en alle mensen die als heiligen Hem navolgden. Dit maakt katholieke kerken zo anders dan de protestantse, die je vooral aantreft in Noord Europa, waaronder in Nederland.
Er zijn prachtige kerkgebouwen bij, maar als je er naar binnen gaat is het toch altijd zoeken naar enige beeld of versiering met betekenis. Het katholieke geloof staat juist bij de gratie van de rijkversierde gebouwen omdat de geloofsbeleving van mensen hiermee verbonden is. Met het sluiten en herbestemmen van katholieke kerken in Nederland breek je de facto het katholieke geloof af.
En eenmaal weg is altijd weg, want in tegenstelling tot onze buurlanden waar de overheid het onderhoud van kerken financiert wordt in Nederland het leeuwendeel van de onderhoudskosten opgebracht door de parochianen. Gelukkig hebben we bij onze kerk een situatie weten te realiseren waar we het onderhoud kunnen betalen door inkomsten uit verhuur en subsidies.
Je zou meer parochies deze situatie toewensen. Helaas is daar binnen het Bisdom weinig oog voor. Het gevolg is dat kerkgebouwen nodeloos verloren gaan of herbestemd worden tot bijvoorbeeld skatebaan, caférestaurant, woningen of theater. Om te voorkomen dat de Hofkerk dit lot treft, zullen we aan de slag moeten met een nieuw plan voor de toekomst binnen het samenwerkingsverband.
In het vorige Hofnieuws had ik geschreven dat er vanuit de Parochievergadering (PV) een werkgroep is gevormd die hiermee aan de slag is gegaan. De presentatie van het concept-plan zou eerst in juni plaats vinden, maar is nu verplaatst naar de tweede helft van september.
Inmiddels is het pastorale team ook aan de slag gegaan met een pastoraal plan voor het gehele samenwerkingsverband. Onderdeel zal een profielschets per locatie zijn die in samenwerking met elke parochie wordt opgesteld. Voor onze kerk wordt gerefereerd aan de slogan “Door schoonheid naar geloof”. Wat mij betreft een treffende karakterisering van onze locatie. Nu gaat het om de invulling. Het streven is om nieuwe mensen de weg te laten vinden naar onze kerk om de rijkdom van het katholieke geloof te laten beleven. Helpt u mee? De uitnodiging voor de parochievergadering over het parochie-plan zal binnenkort via de email, de Nieuwsbrief en de mededelingen op zondag bekend worden gemaakt. Ik hoop dat velen van u bij deze belangrijke bijeenkomst aanwezig kunnen zijn.
