Begin september maakte paus Franciscus de verste en meest langdurige reis tot nu toe: naar Indonesië, Timor-Leste en Singapore. Bijzonder feit daarin was de samen met groot-imam Umar verrichte opening van een vriendschapstunnel tussen de Istiqlal-moskee en de katholieke kathedraal in Jakarta. De wederzijdse hartelijkheid was mooi om te zien!
Begin oktober maakte Franciscus de benoeming bekend van 21 nieuwe kardinalen, waaronder de patriarch van Jeruzalem aartsbisschop Pierbattista Pizzaballa OFM. Zij krijgen op 7 december as. de rode hoed. Dan zullen er 141 stemgerechtigde* kardinalen zijn. Elk van hen kreeg van hem een persoonlijke brief, waarin hij o.a. de hoop uitsprak dat hun sinds eeuwen gebruikte aanspreektitel “zijne eminentie” zal worden vervangen door “dienaar”.

We moeten goed naar elkaar gaan luisteren. Bisschoppen zijn geen alleenheersers, moeten verantwoording weten af te leggen. Ook de leken moeten hun verantwoordelijkheid nemen en krijgen inspraak. Anders gezegd hoe gaan we met zijn allen zo spreken en handelen dat we in onze kerk broeder- en zusterlijke begrip ervaren, dialoog voeren en samenwerken. De al eerder gebruikte methode van “gesprek in de geest” werd ook nu door de deelnemers gebruikt. Niet “dat zie ik anders” maar “in die en die woorden ervaar ik de heilige Geest”. Gebedspauzes inlassen. Polarisatie overwinnen.
Afgelopen februari had de paus een tiental studiecommissies ingesteld die specifieke thema’s Contactblad voor de gemeenschap van de Begijnhofkapel moesten gaan bestuderen (bv. ‘vrouw en ambt’; die trouwens tot ontsteltenis van niet weinigen later weer van ‘de rol af was gehaald’). Deze moeten in juni 2025 met hun eindverslagen komen. Volgens mediaberichten heeft een meerderheid van de synodedeelnemers toch voor gestemd om de optie diaconaat voor vrouwen open te houden. Maar los van wijding ja dan nee moeten vrouwen hun plek innemen in kerkelijke gremia. Dat de inspraak van leken inderdaad verruimd moest worden kreeg algemene instemming. Nu ik dit schrijf is het slotdocument (Italiaans) zo’n etmaal geleden gepubliceerd. Opmerkelijk is dat 7 de paus niet met een eigen brief met definitieve conclusies zal komen.
