On Saturday 12 October last I made my solemn profession in Nijmegen, and was thus incorporated into the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. In a full church I was permitted to pronounce the evangelical vows of poverty, obedience and chastity, in the presence of our provincial superior, Eugène van Heyst sss.

My journey with the congregation began in the autumn of 2006 in the Begijnhofkapel. There I had discovered eucharistic adoration, and I came there every Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Eugène was then rector of the chapel and superior of the community. On one occasion he asked whether I might like to share a sandwich. That is how I moved on from chapel to community.

Something had preceded the discovery of adoration. In 2006, after a long spiritual search, I went to Mass for the first time on Easter Sunday in the Nicolaas church. It was a magnificent experience of coming home. I was particularly touched by the ‘service of the altar’. So much so that I wanted to become Catholic; in October I was confirmed by parish priest Joop Stam. During the preparation I had become aware of a priestly vocation. A year later I began a part-time course of studies at the seminary in Vogelenzang. A year and a half later the rector and I felt it was time to proceed full-time. That meant resigning from my then employer HP/De Tijd and moving to Vogelenzang. At weekends I could stay with the sacramentine fathers on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal.

After my ordination to the priesthood I was appointed as curate at the Nicolaas. That was a very beautiful time, but in the background the question buzzed whether I should not take yet another step: entering the congregation that had the Eucharist as its centre. In 2018 I began the postulancy, and a year later I moved to Brussels for the novitiate: a period of two years in which I could deepen my knowledge of the history and the spirituality of the congregation and of the founder, Father Eymard.

I concluded the novitiate by pronouncing the first temporary vows in our church in Brussels. The provincial administration then sent me to the Brakkenstein monastery in Nijmegen. There I did the scholasticate, and I also went to work at the Centre for Parish Spirituality (CPS), which was founded by our congregation in 1990 and which is housed at Brakkenstein.

In June 2024 I was admitted to solemn profession. This was followed by a 5 period of preparation in Sri Lanka. Somewhere closer to home would also have been lovely, but in Europe I was the only candidate; there I was able to take part in a programme for candidates from India, the Philippines, Uganda and Sri Lanka. It was very beautiful to be there with people who walk the same path, who wish to devote their lives to Christ, the Eucharist and the congregation. It was also enriching to experience an energetic church, in a society where the faith is so alive.

In Western Europe, unfortunately, the church and the congregations are faring less well. The last time solemn vows were pronounced within our congregation in the Netherlands was in 1996, by among others… Pieter van Wijlick and Eugène van Heyst. In recent years the community in Amsterdam has seen an increase in the number of associates. One of them, Marco van der Leij, is now studying at the Johannes XXIII seminary in Leuven. Deo volente he will make his solemn profession in the autumn of 2025.

Geloften
