So searching on the internet, Wikipedia for example. There I can find everything. But how reliable is that information? Do I find information that confirms what I think about the Israelis or about the Palestinians? That can be very biased, and it is important to ask myself whether that information is actually correct. As soon as I speak about this with someone, I notice, if the other person has a different point of view, how quickly I can get into an argument about it. Een artikel schrijven over iets waar al veel over geschreven is, is niet zo’n eenvoudige zaak. Deze keer moest ik denken aan een tekst die gebruikt wordt met Kerstmis (Lucas 2, 14-15): ‘Eer aan God in den hoge en vrede op aarde aan de mensen waar hij van houdt.’ Het is een ietwat bewerkte tekst maar de taal is wel mooi. Dat zingen de engelen op het veld als het kind Jezus geboren is en de herders zien en horen dit alles.
Onlangs was er in de Eucharistieviering een andere tekst van Jezus te horen uit hetzelfde Lucasevangelie (Lucas 12,51): ‘Meent gij dat ik op aarde vrede ben komen brengen? Nee, zeg ik u, juist verdeeldheid.’ Jezus’ boodschap stelt de mens voor een beslissende keuze die tot gevolg kan hebben dat er een breuk ontstaat zelfs met naaste familieleden. Het is echter niet de bedoeling om onnodig verdeeldheid te brengen. Pas als anderen ons tot verkeerde dingen brengen en als er geen ruimte is om ons eigen geloof te kunnen beleven.
We leven met de Adventstijd weer toe naar Kerstmis, de dag waarop wij de geboorte van Jezus gedenken. Die vrede is dit jaar meer dan ooit nodig. We zitten met twee grote oorlogen dichtbij en allerlei andere oorlogen wereldwijd. Ik probeer mij een beeld te vormen van onder andere de oorlog tussen Israël en de Palestijnen. Dus zoeken op internet, bijvoorbeeld Wikipedia. Daar kan ik alles vinden. Maar hoe betrouwbaar is die informatie? Vind ik informatie die mij bevestigt over wat ik denk over de Israëli’s of over de Palestijnen? Die kan heel gekleurd zijn en het is belangrijk om mij af te vragen of die info wel juist is. Zodra ik met iemand hier over spreek dan merk ik, als de ander een ander standpunt heeft, hoe snel ik dan ruzie kan krijgen hierover. Als gelovige wil ik niet iedere keer een kleine oorlog krijgen met Contactblad voor de gemeenschap van de Begijnhofkapel nt g 24 – december 2024 de ander. Dat heeft mij doen besluiten hier veel voorzichtiger mee om te gaan. Het lost namelijk niets op. 1
Ik liep niet zo lang geleden over de Dam. Daar stonden twee zangers. Zij hadden een bepaalde visie over de oorlog tussen Oekraïne en Rusland. Zij zongen Nederlands en met muziek. ‘Wij moeten elkander groeten. (…) Weet je wat je helpt tegen massahysterie, zet je televisie uit! Met z’n allen op vakantie!’ (…) Niet iedereen kon dit waarderen maar ik was toch wel onder de indruk. Deze muzikanten probeerden op een ludieke manier aandacht te vragen voor de oorlog en mensen aan het denken te zetten. ‘Geen escalatie maar onderhandelingen.’
In de Zaligsprekingen zegt Jezus: ‘Zalig die vrede brengen want zij zullen kinderen van God worden genoemd.’ (Mt. 5,9)
Laten wij mensen zijn die vrede brengen. Dan dragen we in ieder geval bij aan vrede in onze eigen omgeving en mogelijk op den duur ook aan de vrede verder weg.
Als dat zo is dan kan Jezus het komende Kerstfeest pas echt in ons hart geboren worden en in de harten van alle andere mensen. Zalig Kerstmis!
