The liturgy seeks to create a space within which God and human beings can meet one another, and within which the human being can leave the church again, inspired and nourished. This monastic tradition, 'abbey liturgy', is enriched by polyphonic singing from the rich musical tradition of the church, by professional singers, and by organ playing.

Over de liturgie
De liturgie wil een ruimte scheppen waarbinnen God en mens elkaar kunnen ontmoeten en de mens geïnspireerd en gevoed de kerk weer kan verlaten. God belijden we als een mysterie die zich heeft laten kennen (geopenbaard) als Vader, Zoon en heilige Geest, lie fdevol betrokken op ieder mens. De ervaring van mysterie en ontmoeting in de openbaring mogen samengaan in ieder van ons op eigen wijze, steeds als we samenkomen in de kerk.
De zondagse eucharistieviering in de Nicolaaskathedraal is de liturgie van de universele -katholieke Rooms kerk, en heeft daarbinnen een eigen karakter. Trefwoorden daarbij zijn aandacht, rust en stilte. Stilte is er bijvoorbeeld na de preek en in de voorbe den. Rust is er in het hele verloop van de viering. Aandacht en streven naar kwaliteit is er bij alles wat we doen.
Een belangrijk onderdeel van de liturgie vormt de muziek. Er worden psalmen gezongen uit het Abdijboek; ze zijn vertaald door Ida Gerhardt en Marie van der Zeyde, en getoonzet door Benedictijner en Cisterciënzer monniken op basis van het gregoriaans. Deze monastieke traditie, ‘abdijliturgie’, wordt verrijkt door meerstemmige zang uit de rijke muzikale traditie van de kerk, door professionele zangers, en orgelspel.
