Met het feest van Maria Lichtmis besluit de Kerk traditioneel de kersttijd. Op deze dag gedenken wij hoe Maria en Jozef het Kind Jezus naar de tempel brachten om Hem aan God op te dragen, veertig dagen na Zijn geboorte. Simeon herkende in Hem het ware Licht tot verlichting van de volkeren.
Daarom kent dit feest de kaarsenwijding: de gezegende kaarsen verwijzen naar Christus, het Licht der wereld, dat de duisternis verdrijft. In de daaropvolgende processie belijdt de Kerk dat zij dit Licht niet voor zichzelf bewaart, maar het draagt door de wereld.
